Vincent Baxter is the founder and Principal of Smallholding, where he leads all aspects of client relationships. Here's what he's doing right now.
Vincent has deep experience in public education leadership, coaching and consulting, public engagement, research, funding strategy, and community development.
His recent projects have included:
- Supporting a state education agency to partner with district superintendents in the redesign of district and school strategic planning processes (17 districts serving 600,000+ students)
- Partnering with the CEO and Board Chair of a multi-site charter management organization to identify and articulate strategic priorities and to plan and facilitate related board work sessions
- Collaborating with the superintendent of a large urban public school district to design and implement cabinet-level systems for continuous improvement.
- Advising on resource development to fund replication and national spread of a cross-sector student-centered housing model.
- Leading social sector executives to plan and facilitate stakeholder engagement to monitor and inform state spending of federal early childhood funds, and to guide implementation of statewide universal pre-kindergarten. (state population: 6 million)
- Advising city government executive cabinet to successfully develop and submit application for American Recovery Plan Act funding. (municipal population: 600,000)
- Writing a comprehensive report describing public engagement and strategic planning efforts of a large urban public school system. (student body: 80,000)
- Facilitating organizational change initiatives in partnership with executive officers in the social sector.
- Advising a philanthropic organization on national growth and investment, local program sustainability, and organizational culture.
- Advising the superintendent and chief strategist of a large urban public school system on strategy related to organizational health, re-entry, and public engagement during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.
- Advising an Education Champion Organization (philanthropic funder) serving a large urban school district to make strategic changes to their continuous improvement systems for college access programming.
- Collaborating with a State Education Office to redesign district-level supports for improving educator professional development systems.
- Coaching a cohort of school principals in a rural school district as they implement instruction- and talent-related systems to improve equity among students.
- Teaching doctoral-level courses in adult and professional learning, community engagement, and curriculum and instruction at The University of Virginia Curry School of Education.
Vincent is a teacher. He served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and English and Health teacher in Cameroon. He was an elementary school classroom teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools and a school principal in the City of Falls Church (VA) Public Schools.
Before founding Smallholding, Vincent served as a senior leader in the District of Columbia Public Schools Central Office where he led strategy and implementation of public engagement programming across a system of 115 schools serving 50,000 students.
He led TNTP's coaching and consulting work in the public charter school sector in DC. He has coached school leaders and executives across districts, charters, and non-profits.
Vincent serves as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School, as an adult leader in Boy Scout Troop 98, and as an adjunct Professor at the University of Virginia School of Education and Human Development.
Vincent studied English Literature at the University of Virginia and holds a Doctorate in Education Administration and Policy Studies from the George Washington University.
He lives in the District of Columbia.
